Orgy at Skybox!

Now that I have your attention.

I don't know if you have noticed lately but it seems like things have gotten a little to serious on the fields as of late. I for one, and the board for two think it is time to shake things up a bit. My motto has always been that you bond with your team on the field, but you meet new people (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) at the bar. So go there. Wait, not right now...Thursday, after the games.

If you haven't been to the bar before, here is what you can expect - Flip cup, beer pong, karaoke. Not to mention the smell of a potential romance in the air - don't deny it, we know that you have a kickball crush (everyone does) and the BAR is the perfect place to make it happen cap'n. Just look at Billy & Julie - kickball's newest budding romance, until Thursday, who will be next? ;-)

As you are well aware, kickball is super-fun. Probably one of the best sports out there. Top two at least. But what REALLY makes it is the people. If you aren't coming to the bar and meeting all of these awesome people, with whom you now share a very special bond of kickball with, then you are missing out on 80% of the fun. (Above photo, just a few of the super-cool kickballers, I mean Globetrotters, hanging out at the bar).

INCENTIVE: This week the board will purchase TWO PITCHERS OF BEER - that's right 2!! For the team that brings the most players to the Skybox this Thursday (11/4/10). You should also get practicing because we are planning to host a flip cup tournament very soon.

PS - we know that Skybox isn't the best bar, especially with some recent changes...however it is still OUR bar, so let's take that place over and have our way with it. The board is working hard to take care of some of the issues and we always welcome feedback about the bar, the league, anything kickball or non-kickball related.

Cheers!

Pesky Winged Vampire Beasts

In all my years living in San Diego (eleven, in case you were wondering) I have NEVER seen as many mosquitoes as I have at this field. Holy malaria they are everywhere!

If you don’t want to cover yourself in deet to survive a night playing with these mighty little beasts, then I have some other, more natural suggestions for you.

  1. Carry a citronella candle with you everywhere….just be sure to drop it in time to catch that big red ball heading your way – unless you are not on my team, then make sure that you hang on to that candle.
  2. Incorporate mosquito netting into your uniform. Where it like you would a ghost costume. Perhaps cut some holes for your eyes and arms – but that defeats the purpose, I suggest leaving it as is.

Ok, those may or may not be helpful suggestions, depending on your coordination skills. However, here are a couple of actually helpful tips:

  1. Lavender – this seemed to work well for me last week. In previous visits to the field, I had barely made it out of there alive. Seriously, I only had one pint (of beer) left! Last week I covered myself with pure Lavender oil (just a dab on the finger tip and a swipe down each arm and leg) and not only did the mosquitoes steer clear, but I smelled pretty too.
  2. Covering up – it is cold anyway, but the more covered up your skin is, the less the mosquitoes will want to eat you – I guess we know what sex these bugs are ;)
  3. Embrace the chemical solution and go for a deet shower before the game.

Mosquitoes are most active at dusk – which is right when we are arriving at the field. Just keep in mind, they will chill out after a drink or two.

Game Recaps

Suck My Kick (light blue) had their first double header last week, playing first against the other blue team…Free Ballers. Suck My Kick didn’t fair very well against the well-developed, mostly-returning-member, team – but it was a great practice game for them and it paid off. They did much better against Team Incrediballs – or Team Road Workers as their shirt color (Hazard Orange) might lead you to believe. Sadly, Suck My Kick didn’t win this one either, but it was close! It was a very good game indeed.

Looking forward to the rematch guys!

Hmmm, that’s the only re-cap that I have…I guess the captains need to send them in if you want the highlights from your game published.

Rain, rain go away….

Hey it did!

After all that worrying that we kickballers did all day, all over the county…the rain did clear up and left us with a nice dry (enough) field, and a beautiful rainbow to play under…what a day for some kickball!

Pre-Season Game Recap

Oh....wait, there was no game.

Right. For those who were unable to join us for the pick-up game yesterday evening, do not fret. You didn't miss the game. Due to a highly technical lighting issue (no one turned them on), we were unable to play. We were however, able to hang out, eat some food and then head to bar, which is exactly what we did.

Then came another shock....children....in....the....bar....what? Well, we stuck around for a bit, because we were there earlier than usual. Once the kids left, they let us have at their buffet that they left behind, so it was free quesadillas and chicken strips for everyone!

It seems that our patronage has lead to some improvements in the bar, they have new tables now, they are much better for mingling than the cafeteria style tables of seasons past. Although now they want to put table cloths on them before we flip cup - who do you think paid for these tables? WAKA did, one flipped cup at a time. :)

The usual shenanigans ensued after that...
  • Flip Cup: Summer Herrmann won with Tiffany Billings (aka, me) coming in Second. In case you didn't know, coming in second in Flip Cup is not the place to be...the winner of the challenge gets to pick a song that you have to sing for karaoke - I had to sing Loser by Beck.
  • Karaoke: Um, I forgot what everyone sang, but I don' t think you want a recap of that anyway. :-P
  • Noticeably absent was beer pong.

Also absent were a lot of new faces that we saw at the field...I am guessing that they either:
  1. Became lost on the way to the bar.
  2. Saw children at the bar and left.
  3. Were abducted by aliens.

In any case we hope to see everyone out at the field and the bar next week. There is still time to sign your friends up. Let's have a great season!

Tips for putting together an all-star team

Most teams add in new players each season - obviously it is important that your players represent well on-field. But it is of equal importance that they carry your team name well off the field. Before committing a new member to your team, you may want to consider the following:
  1. Are they able to down a pitcher (of beer, not thrower of balls) on command?
  2. Are they able to flip a cup on the first flip with a less than 5% failure rate?
  3. Are they able to sink a ping-pong ball into a red cup repetitively, while drinking?
  4. Are they willing/able to hook up with members of other teams for the sole purpose of distracting said player with sidelong glances?
  5. Are they willing to be an absolute jerk to all parties involved in hopes of changing the referees mind during a questionable (every) call? NOTE: It is of the utmost importance that you only have ONE of these players on your team at any given time. If you are at risk of having two players fulfilling the jerk role in any given season, you must hold a pissing contest.
  6. Are they hot? (yes, hot! we all need a little eye candy)
  7. Do they regularly show up with cases of beer to share or voluntarily buy pitchers at the bar?
  8. Do they have any actual skill playing kickball? (on second thought, this one really isn't necessary).
If your new prospect does not fulfill any of these essential roles, then you may want to reconsider adding them to your team.
